About the Book

When Thomas Whaley completed his impressive brick mansion in 1857, San Diego was just a sleepy little town primarily consisting of small adobe houses. The imposing residence quickly became a center of social activity and remained a family home until 1953, when the last Whaley daughter, Lillian, passed away.

This book chronicles the family's journey through prosperity and tragedy alike, detailing how they persevered to become respected pillars of San Diego society. Beyond its role as a family home, the Whaley House served multiple functions throughout its history—housing the San Diego County Courthouse, the Whaley & Crosthwaite General Store, and the Tanner Troupe Theater—all of which were meticulously restored by SOHO during their tenure as stewards of the County-owned museum and are showcased in this publication.
